We’re launching a brand new recipe series here and what better place to start than at the beginning of the day – Breakfast!

We like to kick our day (and our body) into high-gear with a big glass of water. Drinking water first thing after waking up re-hydrates you, flushes out toxins and revs your metabolism up. Once we’ve downed a glass of H20, we head straight for the fruit bowl & vege drawer and fire up the blender.

Lots of people make the mistake of piling in loads of fruit thinking anything fresh must be good for you. But this can add a staggering amount of sugar to your system and you’re better off going for something with a low glycaemic index, especially first thing in the morning.

Low glycaemic foods are typically digested at a slower rate by the body and carbohydrates (in the form of sugars) are released into your system gradually, meaning your glucose levels won’t spike.

One of our favourites is the Vitality 12, available in the Cookes Restaurant Juice Pharmacy. Check out the (very simple) recipe and method below – happy morning!

Vitality 12


Makes enough for two
1/2 cup almond milk
1/2 cup coconut water
1/4 cup pineapple
1/4 cup mango
1/2 avocado
1/2 cup spinach
Sprig of fresh parsley
1/2 cup cavolo nero (substitute with kale if unavailable)
1/2 tsp. crushed ginger
Squeeze of lemon juice
tsp. flax oil
Tbsp. chia powder (or seeds)
Pinch of nutmeg

Place ingredients in a large blender and combine until desired consistency. Add ice and/or water if you prefer your smoothies cool and less thick!
